Kentucky Cave Country
Back when I was about 15 years old, I went to Kentucky with a service organization I was involved in. We had a blast and the one part of the trip that I remember most is Mammoth Cave and how incredibly…mammoth it really was. Since I was thinking about it, I decided to go back to Kentucky in today’s story.
Let’s go underground, way underground and experience a cooler side of life with flowing rivers that form flow stones. Where tiny drops of water create beautiful rock formations and where thousands of years of geology has made the largest cave system in the world. Let’s go spelunking in Kentucky’s Cave Country.
The Caves
Kentucky Cave Country is in south central Kentucky just above the Tennessee border. Here you’ll find caves, lots of them; nearly a dozen with the largest being Mammoth Cave plunging to a depth of over 400 feet into the center of the earth showing off unique geology, stalagmites and stalactites. Mammoth Cave is now run by the National Park Service who offers over a dozen different types of tours so that everyone can enjoy the cave.
Also in the area are several beautiful show caves where you can take a guided tour, explore on your own or take a guided boat ride through a cave. Check out Onyx Cave, Mammoth Onyx Cave, Crystal Onyx Cave or Diamond Caverns. If you’d like to take a guided boat ride through a cave book passage on the Lost River Cave tour and for the thrill seekers walk across the worlds longest underground suspension bridge in Hidden River Cave at the American Cave Museum.
Above Ground
Although you could stay busy for days underground, there is also plenty to do above ground. At the Mammoth Cave National Park, you can explore nearly 53,000 acres of fun. You can go canoeing, hiking, biking, fishing and horseback riding.
For the Kids
A must see for anyone with kids is Dinosaur World with life sized dinosaurs outside in their native habitat. Another place to go with the kids is the Kentucky Down Under Adventure Zoo. Located at the Mammoth Onyx Cave, the kids will be treated to a petting zoo where they can hang out with kangaroos, mine for gems or feed colorful lorries. The kids will scream with delight at the Beech Bend Amusement Park and Splash Lagoon.
Grown-up Fun
Grown-ups can have fun too. Be sure to check out the National Corvette Museum. Drive like a racecar driver at NCM Motorsports Park and once you’re done driving, check out the Kentucky Bourbon Trail Craft Tour featuring 19 small batch distilleries.
